Dortmund, March 9, 2023 – Together with NRW Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst, Dortmund’s Lord Mayor Thomas Westphal and more than 100 invited guests, Harpen and thyssenkrupp nucera laid the foundation stone for the SKOffice on March 9. The office building is on Stadtkrone Ost in Dortmund on the B1.

The first tenant of the top property is thyssenkrupp nucera, a supplier of world-leading technologies for highly efficient electrolysis plants such as water electrolysis to produce green hydrogen. The high-tech company has strong roots in the Ruhr region and Dortmund and is relocating its headquarters to the SKOffice in the second half of 2024. The more than 300 employees in Germany will then have around 8,900 sqm of office space at their disposal.

“North Rhine-Westphalia can do climate protection and industry: With its investment in a new headquarters thyssenkrupp nucera is securing high-quality jobs in an attractive, newly designed urban quarter. With know-how from North Rhine-Westphalia, the climate-neutral future of our state is being shaped in Dortmund,” says Hendrik Wüst, Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The Minister President adds: “With the help of thyssenkrupp nucera’s green hydrogen plants, value creation, employment and climate protection are being reconciled. We are continuing to do everything we can with our hydrogen roadmap to make North Rhine-Westphalia a European model region and hub for energy and industrial transformation with hydrogen.”

The Lord Mayor of Dortmund, Thomas Westphal, emphasizes: “Environmental quality and climate protection are among Dortmund’s central city goals. Hydrogen and a CO2-neutral energy supply for the upcoming energy turnaround is one of the major issues for the future. Today’s laying of the foundation stone for thyssenkrupp nucera is a significant step in this context. Energy supply with hydrogen will play an important role for Dortmund as a business location – on the one hand due to the industrial scale for which thyssenkrupp nucera stands with its innovative solutions, and on the other hand also due to our active start-up scene in this future field. We are very pleased about the new construction of this corporate headquarters. It is good news for the city.”

“Demand for our high-tech solutions for the production of green hydrogen as an important component of the energy transition is growing rapidly. The number of our employees is also growing very strongly. We want to offer them exciting tasks in a modern, attractive office environment,” says Dr. Werner Ponikwar, CEO of thyssenkrupp nucera AG & Co. KGaA.

The alkaline water electrolysis technology from thyssenkrupp nucera is already being used in the world’s first two mega-scale green hydrogen projects: Air Products in Saudi Arabia and Shell for the port of Rotterdam with a capacity of more than 2 Gigawatt and 200 Megawatt respectively. The project with Air Products is technically one of the most advanced of all announced hydrogen projects internationally, while Shell is the largest announced hydrogen project in Europe.

“We are thrilled that we were able to convince thyssenkrupp nucera, a leading electrolysis specialist and globally successful company in the future market of hydrogen, with the sustainable and modern working environments we designed in the SKOffice,” says Franz-Josef Peveling, Managing Director of the Harpen Group of Companies.

With the SKOffice, Harpen will create a top office address with excellent traffic and public transport connections in the first row on the B1 in Dortmund from the end of 2024. The division into two buildings with a total of 18,200 sqm and four entrances also allows for the creation of prestigious addresses for future users. The SKOffice has a high-quality standard of equipment that meets the requirements, especially regarding sustainability and ESG aspects. In addition to the design as a KfW Efficiency Building 40, certification according to DGNB Gold is also planned.
